Hugo Swire, the local MP, commissioned the statue for installation in East Budleigh, Raleigh’s birthplace. Sir George Young, MP for North West Hampshire, said ‘We heard from Hugo that he was looking for a sculptor to do Sir Walter and we introduced him to Vivi Mallock. I think she has captured Sir Walter splendidly — a man who enjoys life but probably not a man to be trifled with.’
